About Us

In the year 1965 some youths of Alipore & Chetla area in South Calcutta were feeling the necessity to accumulate the mission & vision to aware people for their rights as well as duties towards nation. To fulfill this mission under the leadership of Tarun Bhusan Guha Alipur Barta was born on 13th. October,1966 at 57/1A, Chetla Road, Kolkata-700027, paternal house of Mr. Guha under the umbrella of Nikhil Banga Kalyan Samity , a philanthropic social organization of West Bengal. Till date it is the registered address of Alipur Barta. Initially it was published as a one page Bulletin with local news. Publishing mind-blowing news Alipur Barta had been getting popularity in enormous speed. Ultimately in the year 1966 it is being registered under Register of Newspaper of India vide no. 13709/66 as monthly news journal. In the year 1969 April it turns to fortnightly and in the year 1973 April it is started publishing as weekly. First Editor & publisher was Bibhuti Bhusan Chowdhury & Tarapada Nandy. Then Birupakshya Chatterjee took the charge of Editor from 1973. In the year 1993 January Sisir Sinha took the responsibility of Publisher due to sudden demise of Mr. Nandy. From 1998 October Tarun Bhusan Guha took the whole responsibility of Editor & Publisher till his death. Due to sudden demise of Mr. Guha Dr. Jayanta Choudhuri and Sudhir Nandy are selected as Editor and Publisher from October, 2010 respectively.

In the mean time Alipur Barta has gained huge popularity among the people of rural Bengal as well as administration for its courageous news, features & articles. In the year 1975 for a news against unlawful activities of MLA of Alipore constituency Birupakshya Chatterjee & Tarun Bhusan Guha were physically assaulted as Editor & News Editor respectively by musclemen of that MLA and Alipur Barta reached to peak of popularity. Ultimately the MLA was rebuked by the then Prime minister of India as the then MP of Diamond Harbour constituency placed a motion against activities of MLA of Alipore in the Parliament of India. It is needed to mention here that in the year 1988 Alipore Barta uncovered unlawful activities of Alipore Treasury which is marked as a great achievement. Not only that Alipore Barta has played a vital role in recent political changes in West Bengal through news & articles.

Fact Finding Committee on Small & Medium Newspapers, constituted by the Govt. of West Bengal in the year 1978 remarks in its report that “THE COMMITTEE NOTED WITH SATISFACTION THE QUALITY OF THE WEEKLY ‘ALIPORE BARTA’ FAVOURABLY COMPARES WITH ANY OTHER FIRST CLASS PAPERS OF THE STATE. IT IS WELL EDITED AND NICELY PRINTED; ITS PUJA SUPPLEMENT IS REACH IN CONTENTS.”

35th Aniversary of Alipur Barta at Press Club, Kolkata. Attendees among the discussion are Shri Tarun Guha, Minister Shri Pratim Chatterjee, Minister Shri Kshiti Goswami, Former Central Minister Shri Satyabrata Mukherjee, the then District Magistrate, South 24 Parganas Shri Alapon Bandopadhaya and Journalist Shri Sumon Chattopadhay.
